DRAFT GRADES

AFC East

MIAMI DOLPHINS

Round 1 (13): DI Christian Wilkins, Clemson

Round 3 (78): G Michael Deiter, Wisconsin

Round 5 (151): LB Andrew Van Ginkel, Wisconsin

Round 6 (202): OT Isaiah Prince, Ohio State

Round 7 (233): FB Chandler Cox, Auburn

Round 7 (234): RB Myles Gaskin, Washington

The Dolphins had a very good draft, ALL things considered. This is in fact a rebuild, one that will take time. The fanbase is tired of hearing it, I know...Wilkins was a great first pick. Not only is he a disruptive player, he brings great energy and leadership to the locker room. He'll make the other DTs juxtaposed of him better. Round 2 was just as good from a value perspective. Many aren't huge fans of Josh Rosen, but the Dolphins swapping a 2019 4th-rounder for a 2020 2nd-rounder whilst giving up a 2020 5th-round selection was a steal. You'll struggle to find any 4th-5th-round QB drafted in the past 10 years that carries a higher grade than Rosen. If you hate this trade, stop looking at it in a vacuum. Acquiring Rosen doesn't mean the Dolphins can't or won't draft a QB Round 1 in 2020. Nuff said. Deiter is next. He wasn't a sexy pick, but he'll start day one at one OG spot and could stay there for years. Timing-wise, Grier played this perfectly. Miami didn't have a 4th-rounder and there was an insane run on OGs before the Dolphins' next selection slot at 151st overall. I wanted Chase Winovich and he would've been the selection had the Patriots not gobbled him up. But, Deiter and his 54 collegiate starts works out. Round 5 was a head-scratcher for many fans and draftniks alike.  Van Ginkel is a player who folks don't know much about, but this kid is solid, albeit a reach. Let's give pause here and recognize the fact that Grier and Flores are modeling the Patriots. In as much, Van Ginkel will be used the same way Rob Ninkovich was in New England. They tested very similarly to one another, clonish in play type. Round 6 was quite good, as Prince has a very good shot at claiming the starting RT spot. He was adequate if not solid against some stiff competition, rarely a liability in pass protection. He was very good as a run-blocker. Back to back picks were used in Round 7 for a hammer of a FB in Cox and an overly productive RB in Gaskin. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see both make the 53-man roster. The Dolphins also did well in scooping up some notable UDFA's. WR Preston Williams (Colorado State) is a stud, a player who was a combine snub due to off-field issues. He posted 96 receptions for1,345 yards with 14 TDs. LB Terrill Hanks (New Mexico State) was projected to be an early Day 3 pick prior to running a hideous 4.98 40-yard dash at the combine. He isn't that slow, evidencing as much at the Sr. Bowl. On a team that has little LB depth, keep an eye on him. DE Jonathan Ledbetter (Georgia) may be the best UDFA coop for the Dolphins. He's another stout player who tested poorly, relatively speaking. However, at 6'4 280lbs., he's a rock against the run and sets the edge.
